Impossible is not a word, it is a reason for someone not to try

Was browsing through some videos from Jayesslee and came across one that kinda make me believe that almost anything is possible. So whatever you're doing, whoever you are and whenever you feel like giving up, remember"

Impossible is not a word, it is a reason for someone not to try.

Here's the song where I heard that line from. Anyway, JS is awesome =)

Late nights and early mornings

I just got back from an hour's trip to Sembawang camp - sent Marcus for reservist. Can't believe I managed to wake up even though I slept at 3.30am last night. The best thing is, it's 8am now and I'm here blogging. Maybe I should really consider napping before heading to school at 9.30am.. hmmm

anyway, these few nights have been crazy. The exams is around the corner (18th Nov 2011) and I've been burning midnight oil and waking up early. As Karen (my TCM doctor) would say, this is VERY bad for your health. But you know, urgent times call for urgent measures.. I'm sure this period will be over soon and I can subsequently focus on my Real Estate biz.

In any case, on the way back from Sembawang camp, I was listening to 938live on the radio and heard about this retirement scheme called Supplementary Retirement scheme, SRS. It works hand in hand with the CPF. The difference is that the SRS is voluntary and you'll get some text rebates. I'm 25 this year but I think it's important to think about retirement stuff you see. (and getting to know more in the process) Well, more information can be seen here: http://app.mof.gov.sg/supplementary_retirement_scheme.aspx . Hope that if you're about to retire, this will benefit you largely. Upon reading the website, I realised that the financial advisor on the radio was reading the text straight from the website. hmmm.. quite a good way to share info (I mean there's no worries that the info might be wrong) but it makes me wonder if this financial advisor understands the policy. And if so, what are his views on it.

Well, I guess everyone's doing the best that they can yeah? Right. So I shall do the best I can for myself too.. BED HERE I COME!!

Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED) and Convergent Beam Electron Diffraction (CBED)

Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED) and Convergent Beam Electron Diffraction (CBED)

Here are some of the characteristics of SAED and CBED. These are what I've heard from my lecture in school.
  1. SAED
  • Function:
  • identifying crystal structure and lattice structure of a sample
  • examine crystal defects
  • uses parallel beam
  • Why use SAED?
    • sample, comes in foils, easily distorted because of the small size. This causes orientation change from its original crystal structure. So, SAED allows experimenter to SELECT the AREA on the sample with constant orientation
    • SELECT the AREA to study a single crystal in a polycrystalline sample
    • study the crystallographic orientation between 2 crystalline structure
  • How to tell the difference between defects on a sample vs bending of the foil on a sample?
    • tilt the sample slightly
    • if contours move very fast, then it's bending of the foil
    • if contours move slow, then it's the defects
  • CBED
    • Function:
    • same as SAEB but used when crystal defects and second phase ppt at much smaller resolution (nm to Angstrom range)
    • uses convergent beam
  • Why use CBED?
    • improved spatial resolution due to smaller probe beam
    • Specimen thickness
    • unit cell and precise lattice parameters
    • crystal system and 3D crystal symmetry
  • Drawbacks of CBED:
    • high current density damages sample
    • heat might change microstructure of sample
    • local contamination of specimen
  • 4 variables to control CBED
    • convergent semiangle (higher angle higher...) - bigger aperture bigger convergent angle
    • higher camera length higher magnification but lower angle of view of pattern
    • focus of pattern (use 1st intermediate lens to focus)
    • size of beam (smaller size beam higher intensity and resolution)

Read through the changelogs and I'm expecting quite a fair bit from this update. Just the swiping of fingers to open the multi-task bar and scroll through applications is exciting enough for me. I'm gonna try it out once the update is done.

Mambo hasn't been so good for such a long time~

Mambo become a bit boring after repeated visits. After a few months of exile from Mambo @ Zouk, I decided to give it a shot last night. IT WAS AWESOME!

One reason could be because I wasn't there for a longgggg time.. but if you were there, you would've felt the Mambo jives running through your veins and feel how music actually moves your body. It was GOOOOODD!

The funny thing was that Yun, a regular Mambo goer, wanted to leave at 1.45am. He went off the podium and I guess was walking out of Zouk when they played Fireworks by Katy Perry. I kinda knew he would come back.. and he really did! LOL~ Good for him, the nice songs went on to play for the next hour and although I was tired, the music kept me going on and on and on and on..

The music ended at 3.45am instead of 4am last night.. but it's ok.. I guess the DJ knew we're tired.

To end off this post, here's the song that Yun came back for. Fireworks by Katy Perry

    Studying in school's library

I haven't done this before in my entire 3 years at NTU - bring my laptop to school and listen to online lectures. Well, I must admit that it is definitely quieter and more conducive to study here than at home. What's more, 16th floor is undergoing some renovations to their water pipe (which burst) and it making hell lot of noise!

Currently listening to MS3001 and Raj's lectures are seriously 'note not on the lecture notes'. He gives us a graph without any points/notes/words and spend 15 minutes on it. I seriously can't take down everything he's saying! I hope PYP will do me good again this semester.. i've always been depending on it to pass my subjects.

    Back to studying...

    Shorter hair after CNY

It's just after the chinese new year celebrations. This year's ang bao yield became good within one night.. Rachel's parents are v good to me =) but.. my parents are e best.. hahah anw i went to get a hair cut today. it is.. shorterrrr.. like much shorter..

the first 3 pictures show my new hair cut.. v little wax needed to style it this way.. something which i like.. i dun really like to put too much hair products coz i know it's not v good for my hair and scalp. anws.. i miss my older hairstyle.. the ones in the 4th and 5th picture.. there's a mark difference in them right? my main objective for cutting this hairstyle is to have a neater hairstyle for curly hair. the longer one, though more flair-y, is more difficult to maintain.. and i've to spend up to 30 mins to get it in control.. hahah on the other hand, i spent only 5 minutes getting this hair into position.. so i guess.. there's good and bad la..

    which is better??

Liverpool owner John W Henry hails Kenny Dalglish effect - ESPN Soccernet

Liverpool owner John W Henry says Roy Hodgson's style of football was not suited to the club and feels there was no better man than Kenny Dalglish to take them forwards.

    Go King Kenny~~ woohoo =)

watched Liverpool against Chelski at the bridge last night.. Torres started but once again didn't play a convincing game. I think he shld've stayed at Liverpool.. under Dalglish he was regaining back his form and playing much better.. he left too fast.

let's see how Ancelotti help him develop.. *laughs

2nd Day of Chinese New Year

so fast and the 2nd day of chinese new year is ending. this yr's yield is a $100 less than previous years. this year's cny seems much quieter than previous years.. i'm not sure why too. .maybe it's becoz of my age but i feel as though cny isn't as exciting anymore.

but that's not the worst thing that is about to happen. tmr i have to finish up my tutorials for next week's lessons and prepare the notes from my readings for MS3005.

Anw, i've submitted an appeal for my internship results. after 6 months of slogging, i only manage to get a b- for it. paid $10.70 to review my grades and hopefully, i will b able to get better results. now, all my friend's gpa are higher than 3. only mine is left lingering in the 2 region.. 2.86 to b exact. wish me luck for my appeal!
